BOINC Teams

The BOINC framework comprises the concept of teams. People can team up and pile up their credit for the benefit of the team. Not that individuals have to hand over their credit to the team or the manager of the team, they keep their credit; but a members credit is at the same time also granted to the team as long as you stay with this team and stays with the team when somebody leaves. But that's not all, it's just one aspect. The aspect of  a (hopefully) friendly competition between teams on who has the most members, who has the most credit and so on.

More important in my opinion is the social aspect: You can get to know people from all over the world. That is, if you don't just join a team of your own country and stay among your own peers. There are a lot of international teams, that would gladly welcome members from everywhere. You can get help from team members, too, most teams have a site of their own on the net and are offering chats, fora, news letters and other means to communicate with each other.

I started crunching for SETI many, many years ago and for quite a while I was a lone cruncher and did not see the need to join a team. Until the day i got a friendly e-mail from the founder of a (then) Australian team asking me if I was not interested in joining up his team. Well, Australia I thought hey, why not, let's give it a try. So I gave it a try and up to the beginning of 2010 I stayed on. But things grew stale there, so I started looking around and found myself another team: Team Picard. They are a friendly lot, and they don't bite. Yes they do have a forum to ask questions in. Yes, they are helpful and resourceful.  So, if you're looking for a team to join, have a look at their web site.
